Typical lighting installation in Orlando costs $300–$950 for three fixtures in one visit, and about $450 on average. Three simple swaps sit at the low end. Three new recessed lights sit at the high end.
Got more than one job? Small jobs have a visit minimum, so add anything else you need done while your electrician's there. Group your fixtures into one visit and each one costs less.
Fixture swap or new lighting: which do you need?
A swap reuses a box and wiring that are already in the ceiling. New work means opening something up. Almost everything about the price follows from that split.
| Type of job | What happens | Where it lands |
|---|---|---|
| Swap | Old fixture down, new one up, same box and wiring | Low end of the range |
| LED retrofit | New trim or module in an existing recessed can | Low to middle |
| New recessed lights | Holes cut, cable run, switch connected | High end, more if there are many |
| Added switch or new location | Wall or ceiling opened for a new run | Middle to high |
| Specialty: under-cabinet, landscape | Designed around the kitchen or yard | Quoted after a look |
When is it time to call someone about lighting?
Call when the job needs new wiring, a new switch or a ladder you don't trust. Those are the sensible reasons. Here are the common ones:
- A dark room. Mid-century and builder-grade homes often rely on one center light, or on lamps.
- Heavy or high fixtures. A chandelier in a two-story foyer is no job for a borrowed ladder.
- A remodel. Moving the light while the ceiling is open costs less than doing it later.
- Old wiring behind the fixture. Brittle insulation, or a box with no ground wire, means stop and have it looked at.
- Lights that flicker or buzz. That is a repair question before it is a lighting question.
What is included in a typical lighting installation?
The typical price covers one visit and three fixtures on existing boxes, with you supplying the fixtures. In practice:
- Power off and checked. Breaker off, box tested.
- The old fixture comes down. The electrician looks at the wiring and the box while it is exposed.
- The new fixture goes up. Assembled, mounted and wired to the fixture's instructions.
- Test and tidy. Every light works, and the old fixture goes wherever you want it.
What changes the price of lighting installation?
Count, access and whether new cable is needed. Those three decide nearly every lighting quote.
- Number of fixtures. More in one visit usually means less per fixture.
- Ceiling access. High or vaulted ceilings and tight attics add time. Summer attic heat can slow the crawl too.
- Dimmers and new switches. Changing a switch is extra work. See outlets and switches.
- Heavy fixtures. Chandeliers need proper support and take longer.
- New cable. The biggest jump, and the reason recessed lights cost more per light.

How do I book lighting installation?
Choose Lighting and tell us how many fixtures. A photo of each fixture and the ceiling helps. Have the new fixtures on site, with their boxes and hardware. You see the typical price right away. Common questions
Can the electrician bring the fixtures?
The typical price assumes you supply them. If you want the electrician to source them, say so when you book so the quote can reflect it.
Do I need a permit to change a light fixture?
Cities differ. Winter Park's guide lists replacing electrical fixtures as not needing one. Apopka's page says permits are required for all electrical work. The electrician can confirm for your address.
Why do my new LED lights flicker on the dimmer?
Often the dimmer and the bulb simply do not get along. Older dimmers were made for far higher loads. Try a dimmer rated for LEDs. If lights flicker elsewhere too, read about flickering lights.
Can a chandelier go where a flush light was?
Often, but the box has to carry the weight. Share the fixture's weight when you book, because heavy fixtures may need extra support and take longer.
What if I only have one light to change?
You can book it, but the minimum charge applies. Most people get better value by adding a few other small jobs to that same trip.
What if the quote is more than I expected?
You see it before the ladder comes out. You can trim the list, or pass on it altogether.
