Typical outlet and switch work in Orlando costs $200–$600 for three devices in one visit, about $350 on average. That is on existing wiring, say one GFCI and two standard outlets. New outlets that need a wire run, and 240-volt outlets, cost more.
Got more than one job? Small jobs have a visit minimum, so add anything else you need done while your electrician's there. Walk the house, find every bad outlet, and put them on one visit.
What does outlet and switch work involve?
Most of it is a straight swap: power off, old device out, new one in, then tested. The checking is what you pay a pro for. The electrician looks at the wires and the box while they're open, and that is often where the real problem is.
| Job | What it is | How it prices |
|---|---|---|
| Replace an outlet or switch | Same box, same wires | The low end |
| GFCI outlet | Shock protection, usually near water | A bit more per device |
| Dimmer or smart switch | A new control for a light | A bit more per device |
| New outlet, where none exists | A new wire run, sometimes through a wall | Middle to high |
| 240-volt outlet | A new, dedicated heavy circuit | Above this range. See 14-50 outlets |
What are the signs an outlet or switch needs replacing?
Looseness, heat and sound. Those three cover most bad devices. Here's what to look out for:
- Plugs fall out or barely hold. The contacts inside have worn.
- The outlet or switch is warm when nothing heavy is running, or shows discoloration.
- Buzzing or crackling from a switch or outlet.
- A dead outlet with no tripped breaker. Try the reset on nearby GFCIs first.
- Cracked faces or sparks bigger than the tiny blip you sometimes see on plugging in.
Warm, discolored or scorched? Stop using it. If several outlets die together, or the breaker keeps going, that is a repair visit and not a simple swap.
What is included in a typical outlet and switch visit?
Three devices on existing wiring, in one trip. If you want a particular style or a smart switch, have it on hand or mention it.
- Walk the list. You point, and the electrician confirms what each one needs.
- Shut off and test. Power off at the breaker, confirmed at the box.
- Swap and check. New device in, connections tightened, box inspected.
- Test it all. Each device is tested, and GFCIs get a trip test.
What changes the price of outlet and switch work?
Device type and whether wiring has to move. A swap is cheap, and a new wire run costs more.
- Number of devices. The more on one trip, the less each one costs.
- GFCI and smart devices. They cost more than a standard outlet.
- New wire runs. Finished walls, tile backsplashes and exterior walls take longer.
- Old wiring. Brittle insulation or aluminum wiring changes the job. The electrician tells you before going further.

Common questions
Which outlets should be GFCI?
GFCIs make the most sense wherever water and power meet. The list of places your local code requires changes with the code edition, and it can differ between a new install and a repair. The electrician checks yours against what your jurisdiction uses.
Can I add an outlet to any room?
Usually, yes. It may take a new wire run, or an extension from a nearby circuit if that circuit has room. It costs more than replacing an existing outlet, and some cities, like Winter Garden, require a permit for new outlets.
Are two-prong outlets a problem?
They are a sign of older wiring without a ground, and they don't suit three-prong plugs. Do not use cheater adapters. The electrician can tell you the options for your wiring, which may include GFCI protection or new circuits.
Can I add a USB outlet or smart switch?
Yes, in most boxes. Some smart switches need a neutral wire that older boxes lack, so check that before you buy. Bulky devices can also be a tight fit.
What if one outlet is all I need?
You can book one, but the minimum charge applies. The cheapest move is a walk through the house first, so every tired device goes on the same visit.
What if the quote is more than the typical price?
You hear why, and you choose which items to do. Skipping any or all of it is up to you.
