Flickering lights usually come from a loose bulb, a dimmer that doesn't match the bulb, a big appliance starting up or a loose connection. One flickering light is often a quick fix. Flicker through the whole house deserves a prompt look. A typical repair visit in Orlando costs $150–$500.
Why are my lights flickering?
How far the flicker spreads tells you the most. One bulb points to the fixture. A room points to the circuit. A whole house points to the service or the utility.
| What you see | Most likely | How urgent |
|---|---|---|
| One bulb flickers | Loose or failing bulb | Try a new bulb |
| LEDs flicker on a dimmer | Dimmer not rated for LEDs | Annoying, not urgent |
| A brief dip when the AC or dryer starts | Normal startup draw, if slight | Mention it if it's getting worse |
| A whole room or circuit | Loose connection at a box or panel | Book soon |
| Whole house, some lights brighter while others dim | Possible loose neutral, on your side or the utility's | Urgent. See below |
When are flickering lights dangerous?
Flicker is serious when it comes with heat, smell, sound or lights brightening beyond normal. Loose connections heat up. Heat is what you want to catch early.
- Burning smell, or warm switches and outlets. Turn off that circuit if it's safe, and call or text instead of filling in a form.
- Lights going unusually bright while others dim. Turn off sensitive electronics and call your utility, then an electrician.
- Smoke or fire. Leave and call 911.
What can I safely check myself?
- Tighten and swap the bulb. Switch off, let it cool, then try a new one of a known type.
- Bypass the dimmer. Run the light at full brightness. If the flicker stops, the dimmer is the suspect.
- Watch for a pattern. Does it line up with the AC, the fridge or the dryer starting?
- Ask a neighbor. If they see it too, your utility is the first call. That may be OUC, Duke Energy Florida, KUA or Winter Park Electric Utility.
How does an electrician track down flickering lights?
By working from the light back toward the panel. They'll check the fixture and socket, then the switch or dimmer, then the connections in the boxes along the circuit, and then the panel and its main connections. They may measure voltage under load, since some faults show only then. It's a diagnose-then-quote job, so the price comes after the cause is known.
What does a flickering lights repair cost in Orlando?
Usually a normal repair visit: $150–$500, about $300 on average. A new dimmer or socket lands low. A hard-to-reach connection in a finished wall lands high. A failing service connection may become its own panel job. The electrical repair cost guide explains the numbers. If it's the fixture, lighting installation covers the replacement.

Common questions
Why do my lights flicker when the AC turns on?
A big motor pulls a surge of power as it starts, so a quick dip can be normal. If the dip is deep, lasts a while or is getting worse, have it checked. It can point to a loose connection or an overloaded circuit.
Are flickering LED lights dangerous?
One flickering LED on a dimmer is usually a compatibility problem, more annoying than dangerous. Flicker across several rooms, or with a burning smell, is different. Treat that as a wiring question.
Is flicker the utility's fault?
It can be, especially if your neighbors see it too or it happens across the whole home. Call your utility first in that case. If the utility finds nothing on its side, the next step is an electrician.
