Most houses run on 100, 150 or 200 amps. A smaller home with gas appliances may be fine on 100. A larger or all-electric home, or one adding an EV charger or pool, is a strong candidate for 200. Only a load calculation by a licensed electrician settles it for your house.
How do I find out how many amps my house has?
Read the main breaker. It is usually the large breaker at the top of the panel, with its number stamped on the handle: 100, 150 or 200. Open the panel door only, and leave the cover on.
No main breaker in the panel? It may sit in a separate box near the meter. Take a photo of what you find and an electrician can read it from there. The label is a good start, but your wires and meter socket may limit you to less than the breaker says.
What size service suits my home?
This table is a rule of thumb from common trade practice, not a code rule. Your home's real load decides.
| Your home | Often a fit | Worth asking |
|---|---|---|
| Smaller home, gas range or dryer, nothing big planned | 100 amps | Is anything old or worn? |
| Mid-size home, mostly electric | 150 to 200 amps | How close to the limit is it now? |
| Larger home, or fully electric | 200 amps | Are there two AC systems? |
| Adding an EV charger | Depends on the load check | Would a smaller charger circuit fit? |
| EV charger plus pool, hot tub or addition | 200 amps is a strong candidate | Is a second panel part of the answer? |
What uses the most amps in a house?
Anything that makes heat or moves a lot of air. In a Central Florida house the AC is usually the big one, and it runs for much of the year.
- Heating and cooling: central AC, heat pump and heat strips.
- Hot water and cooking: electric water heater, range and oven.
- Laundry: an electric dryer.
- Outdoor loads: pool pump, pool heater and hot tub.
- The EV charger: it draws a big load for hours at a time.
How do I know if my house needs more amps?
You have probably outgrown your service if the main breaker trips, or lights dim hard when big loads overlap. Plans matter as much as symptoms, so count what you intend to add.
Watch out for one common mix-up: slots and amps are different problems. A panel with no free spaces has run out of room, and that does not prove the house needs more power. A breaker tripping on one circuit is usually about that circuit, so start with what to do when a breaker trips.
How does an electrician work out the right amps?
With a load calculation. It adds up what your home can draw, including what you plan to add, and compares that with your service. It is the honest test, because it replaces a guess with your own numbers.
- List the big loads. AC, water heater, range, dryer, pool, charger.
- Note what is coming. An EV, an addition, a pool or a switch away from gas.
- Compare with your service. The electrician also checks your panel, wires and meter socket.
- Choose the fix. Sometimes that is a full upgrade. Sometimes the new load simply fits.
The U.S. Department of Energy makes the EV version of this point: some homes might have insufficient electric capacity for Level 2 equipment, and an electrician can tell you whether yours does. More in charging an EV at home in Florida.
What does it cost to go up to 200 amps in Orlando?
A standard 100-amp to 200-amp swap in Orlando typically costs $1,500–$4,500, permit and inspection included. The utility may be part of it too. In Kissimmee, for example, KUA's service requirements say new and replacement equipment must pass inspection before KUA will energize the service.

Common questions
Is 100 amps enough for a house?
It can be, especially for a smaller home with gas appliances and no big additions planned. A load calculation tells you for sure.
Do I need 200 amps for an EV charger?
Not automatically. Some homes on smaller service have room for one and some do not. Get the load checked before you buy a bigger panel.
Does a bigger panel use more electricity?
No. Amps set how much power your home can draw at once. Your bill follows what you actually run.
